The Challenge

Sustainability

As a major energy company providing natural and green gas to a network of 5.9 million homes and businesses, one of the priority focuses is sustainability. Most companies talk about “sustainability” regarding “go-green” practices, but it’s beyond that. Sustainability applies to internal and external processes, operations, your employees, your goods, and even from your marketing strategic plans to your internal infrastructure. We must ask ourselves: Is this sustainable?

This leading British gas distribution company was in the middle of their cloud journey. They were tasked with completely moving the company’s infrastructure and related business units and activities to Amazon Warehouse Services (AWS). Considering they serve millions of locations across Scotland and the south of England, they needed a solution that was efficient and, most importantly, sustainable.

HWA has proved to be robust, reliable, and flexible through-out our organization’s recent digital transformation to the cloud. As a vendor, HCLSoftware, has encouraged our participation in developing new features which will unlock further value by aligning to our future enterprise strategic goals.

The Solution

Automation is the answer.

If your challenge is sustainability, the solution is most often automation. The gas distributor’s CIO’s perspective, “adopting a solid technology strategy, implementing on Cloud/AWS/Kubernetes, while ensuring business continuity with hybrid coordination of a changing application context.” Enter: HCL Workload Automation (HWA). The company needed to increase efficiency by simplifying and automating workloads. With the addition of HCL Workload Automation, it would improve service level agreements and yield a reduction in deployment and management time.

The Results

Cloud transformation

Deploying HCL Workload Automation on a cloud-native AWS environment, such as Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) resulted in a 10x easier, faster and more scalable implementation. It made all the advantages of HWA available on AWS. There is a low total cost of ownership (TCO). It also comes with the availability of Amazon Machine Images (AMI) on AWS.

To fully understand the benefit of HWA’s low TCO and why you want to take advantage, consider all the costs associated with Cloud TCO. This includes what’s required to host, run, integrate, secure and manage for the workloads’ lifetimes, including the fees you’ll accrue for the underlying infrastructure, such as compute, data transfer and storage. Cost of supporting cloud services, ranging from security and management tools to data analytics also need to be computed. In addition, the cost of manpower for cloud engineers will be part of a cloud TCO equation.

With HWA, UK’s leader in gas distribution resulted:

  • Improved business services time-to-market

  • Reduced workflow errors

  • Increased efficiency in defining, managing and monitoring workflows

A company’s cloud transformation is a journey. With HCL Workload Automation as co-pilot, the journey can result in sustainability and reliability you, your company, your employees, and your customers deserve.
